This wiki has the CharInsert extension installed, which allows configuring shortcuts in the wikitext editor for inserting common symbols or snippets. The configuration is done via MediaWiki:Edittools (or a few other system messages) and the output is a box of insertion shortcuts that is shown under the text editor (note that this is not available when using the VisualEditor, include with its text mode).
For example, try editing Public:Sandbox with the wikitext editor:
And there should be a block below the text editor that looks like

clicking on any of those elements will insert it into the text editor.
